Aguero’s father accuses Guardiola of fake tears over Man City farewell

Leonel del Castillo, the father of Sergio Aguero, has hit out at Pep Guardiola over the way the coach treated the striker at Manchester City.

The 33-year-old frontman has departed City as the club’s all-time leading scorer, with the experienced Argentine opting to run down his contract and make a move to Barcelona on a free transfer.

After 10 years of incredible service, opportunities were there for a prolific presence to remain in England, but they were passed up in favour of joining fellow countryman Lionel Messi at Camp Nou.

It’s been heavily reported that Sergio Agüero did in fact want to remain in Manchester, and his father has claimed that his hand was forced.

My son was waiting right up to the last moment to renew with Man City but it didn’t happen. He is happy right now after signing for Barcelona. I see him happy. He didn’t know what was going to happen with his future.

“There were several clubs interested in signing him. Arsenal were interested and Chelsea to the last minute. If he didn’t stay in England, it was going to be Italy or Spain.

“He’s been friends with Lionel Messi since they were 15 and they’ve always talked. It looks like Messi is going to stay at Barcelona so they’re going to play together,” Aguero’s father admitted.

Guardiola broke down in tears when talking about Aguero after the striker scored twice in his farewell Premier League appearance in the 5-0 win over Everton on the final day of the campaign.

When asked about Guardiola’s emotions, Aguero’s father told Argentinian station Radio La Red: “I don’t believe him. No, I don’t. I believe he never wanted him [Aguero].”

Asked if the tears were for the cameras, he added: “Of course. He wants to be the star of all the teams he is in instead of the players.”

“It’s incredible. He [Guardiola] says he is irreplaceable, and he doesn’t have him in the squad. These are things of Guardiola, he is a great coach. But from one day to the next he changes the players and you never know if you are going to start or not.”
