David Power, co-founder of Paddy Power, passes away at 77

David Power, a significant figure in the gambling industry and co-founder of Paddy Power, passed away peacefully on 8 July 2024 at the age of 77.

His innovative approach and leadership were instrumental in transforming a small Irish bookmaking business into a global powerhouse.

David Power’s journey in the betting world began in the 1970s when he joined the family business, Richard Power Bookmakers, after qualifying as a chartered accountant.

In 1988, alongside John Corcoran and Stewart Kenny, he merged their businesses to create Paddy Power.

This merger was a turning point, and the company quickly distinguished itself with its humorous and bold marketing campaigns, appealing to a younger audience and setting it apart from traditional bookmakers.

Paddy Power’s success was not just about clever marketing. The company was a pioneer in embracing new technologies, introducing telephone betting in the early 1990s and launching one of the first online betting platforms by the late 1990s.

These innovations helped Paddy Power capture a significant share of the emerging online gambling market, cementing its position as a leader in the industry.

Beyond his business achievements, David Power was also a successful racehorse owner.

His horses, such as Sole Power and Slade Power, achieved significant victories under the guidance of trainer Eddie Lynam.

Lynam described Power as “a pure gentleman” and “king of the ring,” highlighting his unwavering support and loyalty.

Flutter Entertainment, the parent company of Paddy Power, led tributes to David Power, highlighting his crucial role in the company’s evolution.

David was a visionary who transformed the betting industry,” stated Peter Jackson, CEO of Flutter Entertainment.

Jackson lauded Power’s innovative approach and his ability to connect with both customers and employees, calling him “a true pioneer.”

Flutter also emphasized Power’s commitment to responsible gambling, a principle that continues to guide their policies. Employees remembered him as “a kind and inspiring leader.”

David Power retired from Paddy Power in 2018, shortly after the Cheltenham Festival. However, his legacy continued to grow

In 2016, Paddy Power merged with Betfair to form Paddy Power Betfair plc, which later became part of Flutter Entertainment, a global gambling giant.
