Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, has lauded his “great friendship” with Donald Trump as the US prepares to host major international football tournaments.
Trump, set to begin his second term as president, mentioned Infantino at a pre-inauguration rally, describing the FIFA leader as a key figure in hosting the upcoming Club World Cup and 2026 World Cup.
Infantino, present at the rally, called the reference “an incredible honour.”
He added: “This is FIFA at its maximum respect – being mentioned by the new President of the United States of America in his victory speech is unique and beautiful.”

FIFA and the US partnership
The US will host the first expanded 32-team Club World Cup this summer, followed by its co-hosting of the 2026 World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico.
Trump highlighted these achievements, telling supporters: “I will be your president for the Olympics and the World Cup, so Gianni, thank you for the World Cup.”
In addition to these events, the US has expressed interest in bidding, alongside Mexico, for the Women’s World Cup in 2031.
England is expected to be a strong contender for hosting rights, which could set up a high-profile bidding war.
Major FIFA investments in the US
Under Infantino’s leadership, FIFA has deepened its ties with the US.
A legal and compliance office opened in Florida last year, bolstering the organisation’s presence.
Bank of America also recently signed as a major sponsor for the 2026 World Cup and this year’s Club World Cup.
Ticket sales for the Club World Cup are now underway despite logistical hurdles.
This tournament is slated to take place every four years under its new format.
Infantino noted: “Together, we will make not only America great again, but also the entire world, because football unites the world.”
