After a two-decade-long relationship with EA’s FIFA, this shift marks the first time that the tournament will not use EA’s game, signalling a dramatic change in the esports landscape.
FIFAe 2024 will feature two categories: console (PS4 and PS5) and mobile, with formats that include both two-versus-two and one-versus-one matches. While mobile players will face off solo, console matches will take a different approach, focusing on teamwork.
Interestingly, players will still qualify through one-on-one matches, with qualifications starting today, according to Konami’s website.

Konami’s eFootball, a free-to-play title, has quietly gained traction in recent years, now boasting over 750 million downloads.
Despite lagging behind EA FC in popularity, eFootball’s dedicated fan base has grown since its transition to a free model.
“We are very pleased to contribute to the promotion of eFootball in a new dimension through this collaboration with FIFAe,” said Koji Kobayashi, a senior executive at Konami.

This year’s FIFAe World Cup will see participation from 18 countries, including football powerhouses like Brazil, Argentina, and France.
The competition will unfold in three phases: in-game qualifiers, National Nomination Phases, and a final offline event to crown the champion. Players who progress through the qualifiers can earn in-game rewards, including 50 eFootball coins and 30,000 EXP.
As Konami takes over the reins from EA, many wonder if eFootball can rise to the challenge. While EA FC still leads in player base and revenue, this partnership with FIFA could boost eFootball’s presence in the competitive gaming space.
FIFA’s chief business officer remarked, “This collaboration aligns perfectly with our mission to promote football globally and provide a platform for players to showcase their skills.”
