New rules limit bonus wagering and ban cross-sell promotions in UK

The UK Gambling Commission introduces new regulations banning mixed-product promotions and capping bonus wagering requirements at 10x to enhance consumer protection

Starting December 19, gambling operators in the UK will be prohibited from offering promotions that require participation in multiple types of gambling activities, such as betting and playing slots, to receive a bonus.

This decision stems from evidence indicating that consumers are at greater risk of harm when engaging with multiple gambling products simultaneously.

Additionally, the Commission is imposing a cap on wagering requirements tied to bonus funds. Previously, some promotions mandated that consumers re-stake winnings numerous times before withdrawal was permitted. For instance, a £10 bonus with a 50x wagering requirement necessitated £500 in bets to unlock winnings.

Under the new rules, the maximum wagering requirement will be limited to 10 times the bonus amount, aiming to reduce complexity and potential harm.

Tim Miller, the Commission’s Executive Director for Research and Policy, stated, “These changes will better protect consumers from gambling harm and give consumers much better clarity on, and certainty of, offers before they decide to sign up.”

These regulatory updates follow a 2023 consultation associated with the Gambling Act reform. The consultation revealed that most respondents supported revising the structure and wording of promotional regulations to enhance clarity and fairness.

The Commission’s actions reflect a broader effort to address gambling-related harm in the UK. Earlier this year, the government introduced stake limits for online slots, with a £5 cap per spin for adults over 24 and a £2 limit for those aged 18 to 24.

These measures represent a significant shift towards prioritizing consumer protection and responsible gambling practices within the UK’s regulatory framework.
