UK gambling market sees record-breaking surge in Q1 2024

The UK Gambling Commission reports a significant rise in online gambling yield, with a notable increase in bets, spins, and active accounts

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has recorded a 12% increase in online total gross gambling yield (GGY) for the first quarter of 2024, reaching £1.46 billion.

This rise covers approximately 80% of the online gambling market.

Slots activity has reached new highs with a 10% increase in GGY, now standing at £642 million. The number of spins has surged by 12% to 22.4 billion, and average monthly active accounts have grown by 11% to 4.4 million.

In real event betting, GGY rose by 16% year-on-year to £625 million, despite a 7% decrease in the number of bets. Average monthly active accounts for sports betting increased by 11%. Major events like UEFA Euro 2024 significantly impacted these figures.

Other verticals also showed noteworthy performance. Other gaming, including casino games, recorded a GGY of £159.6 million. Virtual betting came in at £10.3 million, esports betting at £4.3 million, and poker at £14.1 million.

Licensed betting operators (LBOs), covering about 85% of the retail betting market, experienced a slight decline.

Their GGY fell by 1% to £582 million, and the number of total bets and spins dropped by 1% to 3.2 billion. Over-the-counter betting stood at £168.4 million, self-service betting terminals at £123.9 million, and machine betting at £290.1 million.

The UKGC’s data collection spans from March 2020 to June 2024, offering a comprehensive view of the industry’s trends.

The Commission is currently investigating the categorisation of certain products, which might result in some adjustments between verticals. However, these changes are not expected to affect overall totals.

In response to these findings, the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) stated, “Our members are concerned about the Gambling Survey for Great Britain, as its findings may overstate gambling participation and related harm.”
