Xabi Alonso agrees to become Borussia Monchengladbach manager in June

Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is currently in charge of the Real Socieded B team in the Spanish 3rd tier.

Xabi Alonso will make his highly-anticipated step up to a top managerial role in the summer when he takes over at Borussia Monchengladbach, it has been reported.

Marco Rose is currently in charge of the Bundesliga side but has already been announced as Borussia Dortmund’s next manager, replacing Lucian Favre at the end of the season.

And now German publication Bild report that Monchengladbach chiefs have landed Rose’s replacement with Alonso set to arrive from his present role with Real Sociedad B.

Alonso enjoyed a brilliant career as a player, winning with Liverpool the FA Cup and Champions League, La Liga and the Copa del Rey with Real Madrid and 3 league titles and the German Cup with Munich.

He also was a mainstay of the Spanish side for over ten years and won the European Championships twice and the World Cup.

Pep Guardiola signed him from Real Madrid in 2014 and he ended his trophy-laden career in Bavaria three seasons later.

“He will come back soon as a manager. I bet, wherever he wants, he will become a manager and will be good.

“He understands the game and has the curiosity to understand the game. He knew during the weeks what we would have to do to win the next games, to beat them. He already had the curiosity to know,” Guardiola said.

If he has half a good career as a manager as he did a player, then this might be the first step on a journey that could go right to the very top.

Monchengladbach have been enduring an awful run of form, having lost eight of their last 10 games and been dumped out of the Champions League by Manchester City but won 3-0 at Schalke at the weekend.
